The grotesque and rapacious political hack Benjamin "Beast" Butler made it a crime for New Orleanians to sing it. Well, this one's for you, Beast! Until I get my very own Beast Butler chamber pot, this is my best efforts to show due respect...
General Butler, an otherwise fine public servant, went too far in disparaging the lovely ladies of New Orleans. Shame on him for that. I expect better from flag officers.
A fine tune indeed. Duly captured and liberated, like Dixie. I'll wager that Stephen Stark could actually do something with it for the next hymnal.
The Bonnie Blue Flag has indeed become a truly pan-American anthem - especially in these times where we're all a band of brothers who have had it with Washingtonian usurpation - from California to the Carolinas, from Miss to Mass.
And it is a catchy tune, but not as zippy as "Maryland, My Maryland." ;-)

I thought that was the flag of Somalia!
ReplyDeleteDear Brad:
ReplyDeleteIt is a beautiful flag in its simplicity. How cool that it is being used as a national banner to this day!
