Old American Quote of the Day

"The consolidation of the states into one vast republic, sure to be aggressive abroad and despotic at home, will be the certain precursor of that ruin which has overwhelmed all those that have preceded it."

--- Robert E. Lee, 1866 from his correspondence with Lord Acton.

Anyone who enjoys that quote may also enjoy Kevin R.C. Gutzman's columns on similar subjects. Gutzman has written a book called The Politically Incorrect Guide to the American Constitution. The article I'm linking to describes, among other things, how we fought the Revolution not to become a single nation but a group of thirteen "free and independent states" (read countries).

At the bottom of the article is a link to the archive for his other articles.
