Take a Walk in the Wild Synod(tm)

According to a certain LCMS district newsletter, a congregation hosted a "Women's Weekend." Of course, they needed a "theme," so they went with: "Walk on the Wild Side." Only in the LCMS would a group of women adopt a line from gay icon Lou Reed's rock anthem about transvestism as its theme. Of course, these LCMS ladies no doubt did so ignorantly, whereas other Lutherans perhaps would have been making a statement of solidarity with their trans-sisters. I suspect none of these church basement gals are Lou Reed fans.

It's still funny.

The article goes on to say they had an exegesis of scripture - not led by a pastor (mais, non!), but rather by a lady "Christian singer/songwriter" (mais, oui!). There was also a skit based on a passage from the Song of Solomon. Hopefully, it wasn't too explicit. Fortunately King Solomon doesn't quite hit the same themes as Lou Reed in "Wild Side."

Finally, in keeping with the Lou Reed theme, their husbands dressed up in costumes and did all the cooking and cleaning. Maybe next year's theme will be "Rocky Horror Picture Show."

I know they all meant well, but what else is there to say other than:

Valium would have helped that bash
Said, Hey babe,
Take a walk on the wild side
I said, Hey honey,
Take a walk on the wild side
and the coloured girls say,
doo do doo do doo do do doo
- Lou Reed, "Walk on the Wild Side"

[n.b. Hopefully, this won't find its way into the LSB Electronic Edition!]

Zoinks! This kind of thing wouldn't go over at my church. That's for sure.

The ladies of Peace Lutheran Church in Conway, AR had a retreat with the same title. This is not surprising since this church which used to be where I attended also supports Promise Keepers.

By the way Kathy Tooley is the wife of Peace's family life director.

Holy smokes!
Several years ago I was on an LWML state planning committee. At the conference, I sat in the back and watched in horror. Never again.
